Box lid fitting questions

>Everyone loves that satisfying "pop" of a snug fitting lid- you know what I mean! It comes off with just the right amount of pressure, but not to much...

So a question for all of the "professional" box makers out there- how do you assure the fit every time? I've probably made 10 boxes in my life, and only 3-4 of them "fit" perfectly. Obviously, the rest are loose (or I would have cut them smaller...)

Do you get it close and sand to fit? How much room do you leave for finish? If you go over, what can you do to fix it? (I have one in the shop that is over by the thickness of a piece of masking tape right now!)

Thanks for sharing.
