Anyone else have cracks open using wood hardener?

Craig Daymon
>I was working on an 18" platter for a wedding present for a friend. There was a crack, relatively closed, near the edge. I filled it with epoxy before beginning. The wood is figured maple with a touch of ambrosia/early stages of spalting.

The end grain and the ambrosia areas were giving me problems, so I bought a couple cans of Minwax wood hardener gave it a good soaking. The crack, epoxy sealed and all, opened up about a 1/4" and became longer.

Has anyone else seen this?

Any hope of salvaging? More epoxy?

Thanks,

Craig
