Subject:
Faceplate rings vs. faceplates

>I have an old Walker-Turner lathe that is great except for the oddball spindle thread of 1"x12 tpi. I'm having a hard time finding a small faceplate with this thread size. I've got the Vicmarc VM100 chuck, and there is a faceplate ring that I can use with it. You mount the ring to your turning blank, then the ring fits on the chuck.

I was wondering, though, are there any disadvantages of a faceplate ring compared to a real faceplate? It seems to me that maneuvering a big piece of wood onto a chuck would be less cumbersome than trying to thread that piece of wood onto a spindle.
