Turning Archive 2007
>This OT because it has nothing to do with turning, but at least its about wood.
I have cousin that is a commercial landscaper. Been asked to install a rose arbor on a high rise roof top garden. Arbor is made of "Shorea wood from Thailand".
I posted this on the flat side and got one answer indicating Philippine Mahogany is in the shorea family. Apparently it is a huge family and includes meranti. (sp?)
She wants to know how durable shorea is and will it take paint?
Anyone know anything about it? I went to a US Forest products web site and got 4977 woods that started with Shorea (do they name each tree individually?) No details would come up. Anyone got a better web site?
