Subject:
Turning small hollows, 5/16" detail ideal (?)

Craig Daymon
>I was hollowing some small turnings recently and trying to use a 1/4" detail gouge. It seemed to flex a bit too much when more than 1" or 1.5" off the rest. A 3/8" was too big. I think a 5/16" (which is pretty much dead on 8mm) would be perfect. I have an 8mm bowl gouge to base this on, but not a detail gouge.

I know we have a great crowd of small turners here, what do you think? What tool sizes do you use for...approximately 2.5" to 3" hollow form turnings?

Thanks,
Craig
