Subject:
hollowing with a punky tenon

john lucas
>I mentioned the other day that one of the Box elder vessels I was hollowing for my friend, came off the lathe with a broken tenon. The wood was punky on the bottom end. I cut it down to get rid of the broken tenon but it was still pretty soft.

I soaked it with CA glue and then put 4 short screws in the bottom. It still wanted to chatter because the wood was so soft. I put a homemade steady rest on and was able to hollow this 10" vessel to 3/8" thickness.
