Woodturning techniques and the PC Police

>Keith just brought up a problem with this and every other woodturning site in this modern era of "political correctness". We find the good woodturners having to go out of their way to make sure that they do everything possible to protect everyone from themselves. And that means not talking about sharp tools in specific terms for fear that someone will cut themselves.

They can't describe, and Heaven forbid that they post a picture of an age-old woodturning technique because it might be dangerous. Even worse, they might show how to use a turning tool for something other than its "politically correct" use. Keith or John using a skew on the foot of a bowl would surly bring out the PC Police in force. I was in their sights a couple years ago, and I will never forget the private e-mails I received, all because I dared to post a photo of using my fingers as a steady rest for turning a slender spindle. You got my attention. I deleted the photo and have never posted another photo or description of using a turning tool. Even the AAW is trying to change the name of a perfectly good turning tool because it might be unsafe in the hands of some damn fool who shouldn't be trying to turn wood in the first place.

All I have to say is, LIGHTEN UP, FOLKS. You are missing out on a lot of woodturning education; and you will never advance past being a beginner when you make folks like Keith and John afraid to describe the advanced techniques that will get you there.
