Wood ID help *PIC*

Steve Kubien
>Hi everybody,

Here is one of the logs I picked up in the neighbourhood and I don't know what it is. The guys I got it from was told it was a cottonwood but the pictures I've seen of c.w. are very different than this. I am think some sort of poplar but it didn't grow really tall or straight. When it was still in the ground it had me think ait was a birch of some sort. The bark is kinda thick and grey not thin and papery like a white birch. Wood is softer than walnut, harder than pine (not too broad a range eh?)

Thanks for your help,
Steve Kubien
