Metals that can be turned on a wood lathe

>I don't have a metal lathe but want to occasionally turn, bore, drill, etc, some smallish metal cylinders to use for reducers, adapters, sleeves, etc. For example I'd like to fashion an adapter, a couple of inches long, that would fit into a 3/4 inch female tenon and would have a 3/8 inch hole drilled into the other end to take a 3/8" rod. What is the closest thing to steel that I could still deal with on my lathe and in a drill press?
