Subject:
stumped by tear- out

>It's happened again, and I had to stop turning to post for help. I'm turning the outside of a fairly large piece of Norway maple. The grain is oriented for faceplate turning (sideways),and the end grain portions ( the parts that come around twice per revolution) have horrible tear- out. I am turning with an extremely sharp Glaser gauge sharpened on a Tormek. I have tried very light shear cutting at a high angle with the gauge and careful shear scraping with another Glaser tool specifically designed for such scraping using the burr. Nothing works. Please help.
