Rose Engine Lathe

The plans are up on the AAW site.
I am looking at this and wonder if you couldn't make it completely of wood and MDF. Why couldn't the pieces of metal be substituted with hardwoods? With the possible exception of the spindle shaft I think you could. It would be a little less durable, but with the right hardwood selections it should have a decent service life.
What do you think?
