Subject:
Roughing out Bowl?

Jake (SoMN)
>All,

Had some people over to the shop this weekend for a get together. We decided to turn a green bowl as a group.

I then proceeded to circle cut the blank on the bandsaw and mount it between centers on the lathe.

Here is my question. I proceeded to rough the outside the bowl with a 1/2" bowl gouge. As always, this takes quite a bit of time. A couple of the guys said I should have a rouging gouge to perform this operation. It will work faster and better. It was my understanding that one should never use a roughing gouge on a bowl due to the smaller tang.

What do all of you use to rough out a bowl?

Thanks for your assistance.
