Subject:
lathe is not a vice

>I attended a demonstration yesterday where the demonstrator said several times that a lathe is not a vice. He was referring to not tightening up the tail stock too much when turning between centers. Fair enough. But when I use a spur center at the headstock, I tighten up the tail stock enough to force the spur edges into the wood. So the blank really is in something like a vice. (I usually back it off a bit after I'm satisfied that the spur is grabbing OK.) Have I been doing it wrong? Should I have been hammering the spur center into the blank off the lathe?
