Subject:
How do you tell for certain it's sharp

Jim Rutten
>Here's my question. Before Chistmas, I purchased a tormek at an auction. I love it, but one of the bowls I made out of cherry had terrible, and I mean horrible, tearout. I have made bowls before and none of them had tearout to even approach this. My first question is could this tear out be completely from my bad technique? My second question is how do you tell if your bowl gouge is really sharp. I know people say look at the edge and if you can't see on it's sharp. Well, I don't see an edge but that seems like an inexact methodology. So, there is my basic question. How do you tell if your bowl gouge is sharp. Thanks in advance for your learned responses.
