Finishing" busy " wood

>I just hollowed two vessels in plum wood. It was a pleasure to turn them green. But I would say that the surface has a very "busy" look. By this I mean it has all sorts of little lines, dots, grey swirls, additional grain markings. All kinds of stuff. I know that sometimes this sort of thing can look fine. But I can tell you that in this case, it's just kind of ugly. I tried finishing with some oil, which just made it worse, in my opinion -- it added an overall blotchy yellowish hue that didn't do anything for it.

I'm sure others on this site have experience something similar. Do you have any ideas. I worked fairly hard to hollow these out.
