Advice for lathe speed

>I just received some of the new abalone pen kits from Berea and think I misjudged turning speed on my initial pen. These are a resin encased product so I assume I'll have several grades of sanding/polishing to go through but I had pretty significant tear-out of the resin as I was turning them down to round. Should these things be turned really slow, slow or fast? I have a Jet 1236 lathe. No suggestions for speed came with the kit material. Thanks for any hints!
