Turning a Table Pedestal

>I am planning to make a 5-6" diameter table pedestal based on a commercial one we bought years ago. Main concern here is safety! My pedestal plan is to form a hollow 5-6" diameter Octagon about 2 feet in length overall, then round, sculpt and do some beading in the centre section. Is turning this segmented Octagon way safe? I am a bit concerned about the thing blowing out. Also how would you attach it to the lathe. I am thinking about just covering the ends by screwing in two flat removable octagonal covers, as you will never see the ends. Again my main concern here is safety, any tips, things to watch for or different approaches appreciated.
