Cachunk cachunk

>I've been turning for 47 years now and I admit I am still wondering how to reduce a big gnarly piece of lopsided wood to something round without just standing there getting pounded by every knobby protrusion. Here is the piece du jour, one of the nicest pieces of yew I've ever seen, but at the rate I'm going, it will be a week before I have this vase rounded, if I don't break my tool rest before then.

I can't bandsaw the blank round, I don't feel comfortable carving it with a chainsaw, I don't own an arbortech wheel, and my monster bowl gouge is taking forever. Any suggestions?
