Drying question from a newbie

Steve Kubien
>Evening everybody,

I am nearly finished building a lathe similar to the plans in Shop Notes a couple of years ago. Since I've never turned I though I would try this low-cost option to see if I will even enjoy it. With that in mind I came across some maple which had been trimmed by a neighbour and decided to bring home a bit and dry it out for use once the lathe is done. I was cut today and I slapped a bunch of latex paint on the ends to limit the checking while it dries. Did I do the right thing or am I just making colourful firewood?

Thanks for your help,
Steve Kubien
