Glue Solution hardener???

>I recall someone using a glue solution as a hardener on punky/spalted woods. I've got some birch that is spectacularly spalted, and has a lot of figure, and wormholes. I want to save it, because it is so nice.
I roughed a piece today, and found that no matter what I did, it was going to be a bear to deal with. No matter HOW you apply a gouge, it is going to tear out. Same thing for shear scraping. Anyhow...
