First container, what's proper angles?

>I'm starting to hollow my first form, which will be beverage containers on a boat table.

My spindle gouge is catching as I put it inside to start hollowing out. One catch ripped the piece from the chuck!

On some videos I watched them plunge straight in at the tail stock line, but I get some nasty grabs doing that. I've tried a couple of angles and rolls. Those help, but the chuck feeing grab was on a roll that was working fine for a few seconds.
