Turning speed to practice with the skew

>A fellow turner suggested -- hands on-- that I practice with the skew at the fastest possible speed( for that lathe). I tried it, and I must say I seemed to have more control and got fewer scroll backs. But I remember Don Derry at one of our demonstrations say that you should slow down if you're having any trouble. So which is it? What do you think?
