? About "Burl" Effect in Cherry

>I was given two logs of cherry that have all kind of "burl" type of graining. The effect goes completely through the log and from what I was told about it is that the entire trunk of the tree is/was like that. On both chunks that was given to me I noticed what looks like char on the bark.

Is it possible that the "burling" was caused by a lightning strike that only grazed the outside of the tree?
