Subject:
Powermatic Headstock Problem (?)

Brad Vietje
>Hi Gang,

I recently learned that earlier versions of the PM 3520 had a very dangerous problem with the headstocks -- the castings occasionally broke, and they FELL OFF -- while being used ! This apparently was not a problem of over-tightening the locking mechanism on the sliding headstock, but a serious design flaw.

There doesn't seem to be much on-line about this, but last weekend I talked with some very, very well known professional turners who relayed that 3520 lathes at both Arrowmont and Anderson Ranch had this problem....

Can anyone out there add any details ?

I have two reasons for asking:

1. Owners of older 3520-A lathes might want to look into extended warranties, recalls, fixes, or other actions they might take to protect themselves.
2. I recently bought a 3520-B, and from what I hear, the problem has been corrected in these newer models -- but is this true ?

I would appreciate any additional info the group can provide on this.
