Attaching a finial??? *PIC*

>I just created a lidded walnut bowl with a maple lid and walnut finial and had quite a time attaching the finial. I realized that I didn't know any techniques. I cut the tenon on the finial about 3/16" long, then drilled a 1/4" deep hole in the lid. I glued it in with CA, but it didn't hold. I then tried wood glue and it didn't either. I finally wound up using 5-min epoxy which did work. There has to be a better way!!!
Would some of you share your technique for attaching finials?

Thanks in advance.

Here is a photo of the bowl. It is about 7" in diameter and 7" tall with the lid and finial.
