Subject:
best finish for a loose change bowl?

GaryG in MD
>I'm going to make a small, shallow walnut bowl or plate to throw loose change (coins) in. Over time, the finish will be abused by the metal. My question is: is it better to go with a penetrating (oil) finish which won't chip but will scratch fairly easily, or a harder surface finish which may be less prone to scratching but more prone to eventual chipping? I'm sure there are arguments both ways. What are your opinions? This will be for a gift, so it won't be able to be touched up -- I'm looking for the best look for the longest period of time. TIA, Gary
