>When carving raised details in turnings it is often desireable to have both areas on each side of the ring the exact depth so the carving goes faster. This is really handy for carving feet or in this case raised details on the lid of a box I'm working on. Here is an easy way to make sure the surfaces flow into each other when done.

I use dividers to touch both surfaces and then simply check to see if the dividers are perpindicular to the surface. Of one is higher than the other it's pretty easy to see how tilted the dividers will be.
