Subject:
Help with a club challenge idea

David Breth
>Last night at my turning club meeting, I made the suggestion that we consider a club challenge. President thought it was such a great idea that I should go think of some ideas and present them next month. Hmmmm.

My thought is to come up with something that everybody can participate in - something that is not overly technical and does not require tools beyond the basics. We have a lot of new turners, so I want to make sure it isn't beyond them, but I would like the idea to be kind of unique so it sparks the interest of all. I'm looking for suggestions.

So far I've only come up with a couple of ideas:
End Grain Bowl
Turn something to the shape of the fruit of your choice
Turn a using only one tool
Turn a candle out of the wood of your choice (candle in a base that is lit).

I kind of favor the candle idea because it puts pretty much everybody between centers on spindle work, would be good practice for newbies and allows some creativity for more experienced turners.
