OT: Question for you photo buffs...

david
>Hoping to improve my meager photo taking skills. While I am aware of the depth-of-field ramifications of a stopped down lens, on my digital camera I get lazy and forego the manual settings and use the auto focus, auto exposure settings. My question is: In the automatic mode, which setting gets more depth-of-field, assuming constant light levels: 1) Setting up a distance from my turning and using the zoom capabilities of the camera to fill the viewfinder, or 2) With no magnification, bring the camera physically closer to the object until the viewfinder is similarly framed and filled? I hope the answer isn't "It depends". Come to think of it, how about just increasing the light level?
