Wood ID help

Jason Clark
>This is probably a longshot but I'm posting it anyway. I'm trying to identify the wood in the shots below. The trunk and stump had sat in the Arizona desert for at least a year before I finally collected it last weekend. The wood was bone dry throughout and has the wonderful grey spalting shown below. The majority of the bark was gone, what was left is pictured below to aide identification.

Also found nearby was a plastic plant label with the following information:
Cottonless Cottonwood
Populus Balsamifera (Candicans)

Can anyone confirm that this is Cottonless Cottonwood or one of the other names by which this species can be known: Balsam Poplar, Black Cottonwood, of Balm of Gilead?
