Question about Ebony and Blackwood

Carole Valentine
>When using these woods for collars (not finials), are they dense and fine grain enough that you can turn the collar end grain? In other words, can I just slice a piece of the appropriate thickness off the billet or should I rip it to thickness then cut the piece so I am turning face grain? The stuff is so darned expensive that I feel it would be less wasteful if I could orient it end grain. Just thought I would ask before diving into it.
