Wall thickness

>Is there a general rule of thumb for how thick the wall of a bowl should be in relationship to the dimensions? I realize that, to some degree, the thickness will depend on the bowl's intended use as well as the type of wood being used. Let's say I was turning a salad bowl from Maple about 12 inches in diamter and 3-4 inches tall. Any suggestions and/or links are appreciated.
