>No, I haven't tried up and down adjustment. I think getting the friction right would be difficult. I put mine at a height that allows the light to be around head height most of the time. My light is a 24". The weight of the lamp makes it more difficult to put it high than lower. If you go this route, experiment first by holding the lamp base at different heights and moving the head to find where it works best for you. I think the 18" would work better for the upside down position. The head might stay in the up position better.
