You'll need the groove, of course, if you're going to mount the lamp hanging downward from the base. I expect it would be pretty quick business to mill a groove by putting your bolt cut-off in a drill press or lathe-mounted chuck or collet and attacking with a small chainsaw file. The Moffatt stud does measure a true 0.500" so you might want to check the actual size of bolt shafts.

I don't have your depth of experience with operating systems but I do know that my new Vista computer with 1G RAM and dual-core is slower than my WinME Celeron with 192 megs RAM. I am still finding new XP machines for my clients.
