Have you considered leaving the rim wide for the inlay but turning down the outside to create a "flare" at the lip?
(the thick walls make it look heavy almost "clunky")
What do I know I have never turned a "bowl" larger than a coffee cup without a handle.
Please don't paint it.:>)
