I drew out the desired curve on a 3x5 card, cut to make a template, traced the profile onto the wood, then used the template to check while turning. But eyeballing would have been fine. I just picked a sine wave for fun since it had a both high and low portions connected by a smooth transition. A freehand curve of any kind might have worked have worked as well, although I didn't particularly like the examples I saw at the club meeting.

BTW, I didn't mention it but I did make a quick prototpe with scrap wood as "proof of principle" before chucking up a good piece of walnut. I used a different profile curve on the prototype and decided a more extreme curve would work better.
