>Some years back I stuck a 3" steel pipe in a 5 Gallon bucket filled with cement. The upper end was threaded to take a reducing section into which the tool rest fitted. 'Twas a bit hairy, but I was able to turn a large piece outboard on a Myford lathe. Fortunately I no longer have the Myford 'cause I don't think I'd try it a second time.
At any rate a cement=filled base might help and not cost too much.
