An interesting foot

Fog Tanner
>The foot on an interesting bowl. I made a bowl on the new Escouleon chuck. Since it will do off center and eccentric, I decided to do both at the same time. This results in the outside having several different profiles. The rim is not flat across, having one portion at an angle. The inside has to intersecting "bowls" of unequal depth. And the detail on the foot is slight offcenter, making the entry cuts interesting.

For finishing up the foot, a vacum setup would not work due to the shape. A set of cole jaws would not work as you normally would as the outside having two profiles, is also slightly oval. And there was the rim not being flat. What finally did work was using part of the buttons on the cole jaws, a wedge that supports part of the rim and lots of masking tape. A slow speed on the lathe and light touches with the gouge. Also made sure I had the Airstream on for the head protection if it failed. I was having to use real masking tape (3M) as I had run out of the cheap Wallymart brand. I normally use the Wallymart brand as it is horrible for painting but works great for clamping (due to its higher tack). Duct tape would have been better, but would have left a mess on the wood.

Later tonight its some little 6" outflowing bowls.....first I have to dye this piece.
