I have a 2 car garage and live in middle Tennessee. It gets mighty hot in the summer so I insulated and put a small window unit in. It's pretty quiet and I don't see why it couldn't be mounted flush with wall on the outside as long as you make sure the condensation has a place to run. You wouldn't want it to rundown the wall.

It's a really small unit and I have to run a fan directly on me during the really hot humid days but it's very tolerable and all I could afford for now.
