Minwax makes a wood hardener that works well, slop it on and it penetrates soft wood. It's in a yellow can at Lowe's and Home Depot. Use it and store it with great caution, because it is VERY flamable. Don't allow any ignition source in the area.

You can also use thin super glue and thinned lacquer, both of which will penetrate the wood and stiffen the fibers.
