Second, looking at that piece of wood, I would not consider turning it. Here in the northeast, cherry is plentiful, and there are lots of good sound pieces to choose from. A catch would have torn about a third of your bowl away, risking injury to yourself.

You will probably get many different opinions than mine, but I'm not one to advocate "saving" pieces, to me, they never look right.
