>Take a class in turning where-ever you can. Check out/buy a few books such as Ernie Conover's or Keith Rowley's. Do your research first.
Don't underbuy.
Minimum purchases:
1) Lathe
2) Tools
a) Roughing gouge
b) Bowl gouge
c) Spindle gouge
d) Skew
e) Scrapers (several)
3) Sharpening system (grinder and jigs)

Everyone has their favorites. You will find yours.
