I've made several handles for the Kilpatrick family and friends which hold the short disposable type seam rippers. I'd use blanks at least 3/4" by 3/4" at 6" long. Drill a hole in one end to fit the rippers (I think it takes a 19/64ths bit to 3/4" depth, but I'll check that later and post it). Put the blank in a chuck (aligning the hole with your tail center) and turn your desired handle shape. Leave pkenty of material around the hole for strength, if you don't your handle with split. Just use a wax finish, these things will be used a lot and will develop a nice patina with that use.
