I think absolutely the best deal going is on the Crown ProPM gouges from the Klingspor Woodworking Shop (link below). They have the ProPM gouges in the $40-45 dollar range. Woodcraft has these for $69. These gouges have the same flute shape as the Ellsworth Signature gouge from Crown.

They do not have the Crowns on their website, but you can call the catalog number at 1-800-228-0000 to order. Be sure to specify the ProPM tools as they stock both the HSS and ProPM tools. The powdered metal definitely holds an edge longer and grinds easier than HSS. The Crown gouges are sized by flute width, so a Crown 1/2" equals a Sorby 5/8" They standard HSS tools are a few dollars cheaper.

The local Hickory NC store number is 828-326-9663. If you call them directly they will be able to help you. Their shipping is very reasonable. They had a new shipment in last week when I was there.
