>A very good "quick lesson". Another approach that I have used. Using a medium to dark colored wood, I have used koa, walnut, madrone, whatever I had in the shop, turn it round between centers to about 2" to to 2.5". Put it in your 4-jaw, drill a 3/8" hole down the center, then slice off pieces about 5/8" thick. Glue in 3" pieces of maple dowels, which show a nice contrast to the darker wood, extending it out 1/2" on one side. Place it in small spigot jaws of your chuck or a jacobs chuck, bring up the tailstock, and turn it as Ranger D has described, except for the chatterwork.
