Tom:

You might want to have a look at a book by Derek Hayes entitled Woodturning Design: Using Shape, Proportion, and Decoration - I reviewed this book earlier this year (review published in American Woodturner in the June 2012 issue I think...), and the book explains many different kinds of surface embellishment techniques, more or less as a summary of what is possible. There are no real step-by-step instructions in this book that provides actual instruction in how to accomplish the different methods, per se. To my knowledge, there is no single book, DVD, or other reference currently available that covers all of the variously embellishment techniques being used today, particularly as a form of instruction and technique explanation.

Good Luck,

Rob Wallace
