I think one of the simple epiphanies in a turner's development is that failure is part of the process. If you stop treating failure as a finality, and start thinking about it as a part of growth, the world changes.
I tell people that even with my skill level, I still probably lose more pieces than most beginning turners do. However, the ones that make it off the lathe are pretty good pieces because I took that extra cut, went a little thinner, or decided that "Good enough, wasn't."
