+1 on getting to know the lathe before using it. If the demonstrator doesn't have time, then someone else needs to turn the machine on and adjust speeds for him.

I have a DVR XP and think it's a fantastic lathe. Had the demonstrator taken the time (about 3 or 4 minutes) to get to know the lathe, he wouldn't have had the problem he did.
