has to be on experimenting. You can take any old scraper and grind a bevel on the top. It won't be wrong. You simply cannot do it wrong. However, you may not be able to cut with it if you haven't spent the time at the lathe. Almost any angle will work, and anyone that tells you differently probably has a line of tools somewhere.
I usually tell people that if you cannot cut with the tools you already own, odds are new ones won't solve your problem no matter what angle, or steel, or whatever...
