Re: How are used lathes priced?

Greg Haugen
I do think used lathes have more value than a used car, for example. Partially, the demand for it and the lack of things that can go wrong in a lathe compared to a car. On the flip side, I think some people are joking themselves as to what their lathe is worth. A old delta lathe with round bar ways, 12" swing, no stand, covered in rust, and has 1MT headstock and tailstock is not worth $700. Or I've seen someone list a Nova 3000 with a 2by homemade "A" frame stand for $2300. Both of these lathes are priced at their current counterpart's price and has little to no of the advancements on them. They're not worth that.

I do agree that hobby/professional lathes do not lose much value and if any thing, almost gain some due to the new product price increases.

I also think there are some lathes that have a lot more potential due to their rareness. For example, I've only seen a handful of Graduate lathes in the USA. They went for a pretty price.

"You'll only cry once buying an expensive tool, you'll cry every time you use a cheap tool," holds true to buying quality lathes.
